What is division?
 Division is breaking a number up into an equal number of parts.

49=7+7+7+7+7+7+7

We use such words to do the multiplication and the division:

• multiply (by) – множити;
• multiplicanda - множене
• multiplier - множник
• product - добуток
• divide (by) – дІлити на;
• dividend - ділене;
• divisor - дільник;
• quotient - частка

: division sign - знак ДІЛЕННЯ

6x3=18	Six multiplied by three equals eighteen
	Six times three makes eighteen
	Six threes are eighteen
6 is multiplicanda, 3 is multiplier, 18 is product	6 - множене, 3-множник,8 - добуток

21:7=3	Twenty one divided by seven is three
	Seven into twenty one goes three times
21 is dividend, 7 is divisor, 3 is quotient.	21 - ділене;7-дільник; 3-частка

Division and Remainders

Sometimes when dividing there is something left over. It is called the remainder.
Example: There are 7 bones to share with 2 pups.

But 7 cannot be divided exactly into 2 groups,
 so each pup gets 3 bones,
 but there will be 1 left over:
7:2=3  R(remainder)=1



We say:

 "7 divided by 2 equals 3 with a remainder of 1"

And we write:

7 ÷ 2 = 3 R 1
As a Fraction

 It is also possible to cut the remaining bone in half, so each pup gets 3 ½ bones:

7 ÷ 2 = 3 R 1 = 3 ½

"7 divided by 2 equals 3 remainder 1 equals 3 and a half"
